"Emerging technologies can even make cities smarter, and greener, by optimizing traffic flows, waste collection, street lighting and remote access to health and education," adds Fossier.
The telecoms industry is ramping up its efforts to combat climate
change, despite the recent economic challenges. Cost savings, better
differentiation and improved brand loyalty are all proving to be key
drivers for investing in green IT projects, and ultimately, the ICT
sector can reduce emissions five times greater than it generates.
Stewart Baines, an experienced international business technology
journalist who has written for Current Analysis, Silicon.com and
Business Week, investigates.
Investments in green technology are continuing to pick up pace,
according to Frost & Sullivan's report Sustainability in Telecoms:
Return on Environmental Investments.
Changing population demographics and illness profiles mean that
healthcare providers globally are facing significant challenges in
delivering high-quality care to patients. And, as patient numbers rise,
so do the costs. Can technology provide an answer? Real Times talks to Thierry Zylberberg, Executive Vice President, Orange Healthcare.
The iPad might be capturing the media's attention, but this year's key
trends in the enterprise computing environment will be a three-way
battle between Microsoft, Google and an army of cloud service providers. What
may prove to be one of the most promising enterprise technologies this
year is a little surprising considering that the last version of
Microsoft Windows, namely Vista, was such a disappointment when it
launched three years ago.
It is amazing to think that Google celebrated its tenth birthday last
year. The company's importance on the Internet has risen to the point
where it is now a verb. It captured the imagination of Web users as the
scale of the Web grew and things became harder to find. Now, a Web
without search is unthinkable. But there is still plenty of work left to be done in search technology.
Google's Vice President Marissa Mayer said last year that 90% of the
problems surrounding search had been solved. She later clarified to
explain that 90% of the work had not been done. Instead, in a variation
of the Pareto Principle, 90% of the work involved in perfecting Web
search technology will be done, solving the remaining 10% of the
problems.
Continuing investment in telecoms infrastructure is one of the key
elements in the structural reform required to ensure that the Middle
East and North Africa meets its long term development challenges. For some time, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa
(MENA) has fared better than many other parts of the world during the
global economic crisis, with the IMF estimating economic growth of 2.6%
last year (following an increase of 5.7% in 2008) and predicting in
excess of 4% growth in 2010.
IT help desks are now a global business, leveraging the best locations,
language skills, education and affordable staffing costs. The global
nature of this business means providers need a global communications
partner to knit the plan together. TechTeam is a contact center outsourcing company, primarily in the area
of IT help desk. From its origins providing outsourced IT support to
companies in the U.S. vehicle industry, it has diversified
internationally and into new vertical markets. It now has 2,200
employees working at sites in Belgium, Germany, Romania, Sweden, the
U.K. and the U.S.
Orange has developed a voice management solution that can eliminate much of the complexity that enterprises face in managing their voice infrastructures and deliver substantial cost savings. To support this solution, Orange has also developed a customized calculator that can show exactly what savings each individual organization can generate.
