The Fall from Grace

What went so badly wrong? Why did something that was held up as a beacon of hope to the world suddenly implode, collapsing in upon itself in such an alarming fashion when so much depended on its success? I speak about the Copenhagen summit, an event that has, somewhat alarmingly, dropped off the radar of late. But then no one likes to dwell on bad news for too long, especially the politicos at the center of that debacle. A couple of months down the line and we now seem to be a million miles away from the "accord" that we were led to believe was desperately needed - and achievable - to help save the planet.

Thumbnail image for Kelly-Matt.jpgIn my last column for this publication, I wrote about how the spadework of corporate compliance in the last several years has laid the foundation for larger attempts at true, enterprise-wide risk management. This edition, I want to talk about one particular challenge in achieving that next step: measuring risk and compliance, so you can understand whether all this work is actually amounting to anything.

That topic of measurement is fresh in my mind because I recently hosted an executive roundtable on the subject. Our 14 attendees - all high-level executives at large companies, serving as chief audit, risk or compliance officers of some kind - expressed remarkably similar frustrations, despite hailing from a wide range of industries.

Kelly-Matt.jpgI imagine corporate executives are much like other human beings. Namely, they want to do their jobs--and do them well, promptly, and thoroughly, of course--and then go home.

No such luck. Increasingly, and I'm sure to many executives' dismay, they are trapped in jobs where they must, you know, think.

SC Magazine is an intelligence source for information security and risk professionals.

In the last issue of Real Times, I wrote about the need for information security professionals to move out of the bunker, embrace new thinking and embed themselves into the business.

Since writing that piece, I have been on the road visiting conferences and expos in various countries, which I saw as a good opportunity to see whether my theories stand any chance of becoming reality.

Many business leaders leave information and data security to the IT department because they don't understand it but, more pointedly they don't want to understand it. For their part, the IT security professionals tended to see themselves as a breed apart the mindset of the IT security professional has been shaped by the need to control -- control network access, control web and email content and control data.

Richard_Cree (s).jpgOur editorial team has always featured well respected journalists and regular contributors to national newspapers and industry publications. We will now have  guest writers, who will write their own columns. We begin this issue with Richard Cree, editor of Director.

Director is a monthly business magazine for business leaders, published on behalf of the Institute of Directors. As such, we regularly cover issues such as the costs and benefits of flexible and remote working. For August we decided to explore some of these issues first hand. In a brave attempt to embrace the wonders of technology, the Director team experimented with working remotely. The idea was to put together an entire issue of the magazine from our sofas, gardens and home offices. In the process we tested some of the theories on remote and flexible working.
